The Challenge

The Binocular Accommodation Gauge—also known as the RAF (Royal Air Force) rule or RAF near-point rule—is a well-established instrument in ophthalmology, widely used to measure the near point of convergence (NPC) and the near point of accommodation (NPA). It was first introduced in 1956 by Air Vice-Marshal J.C. Neely.

Although production of the rule was discontinued due to a perceived decline in its use within modern optometric practice, recent years have seen a notable resurgence in demand. In response, Crucible Innovations was proud to take on the challenge of reimagining and delivering a high-quality, modern alternative to this classic tool.

The Process

In redesigning the product, our key objectives were to create a lighter and more durable body, explore advanced materials for the nosepiece, hand rest, and measurement slide, and ensure the product remained proudly manufactured in the UK.

We re-engineered every component from the ground up, incorporating a sleek, laser-etched anodised aluminium bar for the main body. All components are crafted from 100% recyclable materials, reflecting our commitment to both quality and sustainability.

The Outcome

Crucible Innovations now manufactures our Binocular Accommodation Rule for several leading distributors across the UK. We are also actively engaged in the development and reintroduction of specialised instruments that have been discontinued or are no longer available through mass production.
